The Lean Heroes at the Summer Fayre

The village summer fayre is on Saturday. The Lean Heroes want to run a lemonade stall, to raise money for the treehouse dojo.

Master Taff: "Before you squeeze a single lemon, let's see the whole picture."

Who's helping

    How to play

    1. Plan the stall. Sort the cards into five columns: Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, Customers. That's called a SIPOC.
    2. Run the stall. Three busy rounds on fayre day. Make one choice before each.
    3. Fix it next time. See what went wrong, and how the five DMAIC steps would fix it.

    For grown-ups

    SIPOC in one minute

SIPOC is a one-page picture of a process, in five columns:

You fill it in before you change anything. Then everyone agrees what the process is, where it starts and where it ends.

    Why real businesses use it

A SIPOC shows the edges of the problem. It also catches the forgotten input or the forgotten customer before they cause trouble. It works the same for a factory line, a hospital ward or a school lunch queue.

    The Feynman check

Can you explain the five letters to your child using your own kitchen? Then you've got it.

Try breakfast: who supplies the bread, what goes in, the steps, what comes out, and who eats it.

    Elements of Lean

Learn Lean by teaching it to your child. Read the bonus lesson: SIPOC
